Santo Domingo

Dominican Republic’s vibrant nightlife and stylish restaurants add to the multifaceted travel experience you can have. This wonderful island is basically a living museum with seaside resorts; while being an important business center in the Caribbean, it preserves its laid-back, friendly spirit. Santo Domingo, a modern metropolis with more than 3 million inhabitants, is Dominican Republic’s capital, as well as the major cultural, political and economic center of the country. In fact, it is the largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean based on population. Therefore, a perfect choice for your Spanish Courses in Dominican Republic if you prefer urban life. Altogether, the subway infrastructure, Museum of Modern Art, several art galleries and big shopping centers reflect Santo Domingo’s modern life. At night, you can hear Merengue and Bachata music blasting speakers almost everywhere. Needless to say, Santo Domingo is truly unique; its history goes back to over 500 years! Christopher Columbus landed in Dominican Republic in 1492. He named it “La Española”, and his son, Diego, was its first viceroy. The capital, Santo Domingo, which was founded in 1496, is first European settlement in the Western Hemisphere and consequently, the first territory in Latin America under Spanish colonial rule. Thus, you can visit the Zona Colonial, where the first university, cathedral, castle, monastery, and the first fortress were created in the ‘New World’. This area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990. On Sunday nights, Dominicans like to get together for live music & dance at “Las Ruinas de San Francisco,” the remains of the first monastery! Students like to go as a way to meet locals and practice their Spanish skills.

Another city you can choose for your Spanish lessons is Sosua, located in the Puerto Plata Province. Essentially, the perfect place for you if you love nature or if you are a sports enthusiast. Sosua is located only 10 min driving from the International Airport of Puerto Plata. You can discover Dominican Republic’s countryside, learn about Dominicans’ daily life in a rural environment, as well as in typical small beach, tourist towns. Additionally, you can of course, go swimming, surfing, scuba diving to see coral reefs, bathe in beautiful Caribbean beaches, or horseback-riding and playing golf on the countryside. Moreover, Sosua is known as a rural area on the north coast of the country. It’s home to about 12,000 inhabitants, is known for its beautiful beaches and water sports facilities. At only 15 minutes to the East, you can find a surfer's true paradise called ‘Cabarete’, which is one of the best wind-and-kite surfing spots in the world. On the weekends, be sure to visit the Mundo King Art Museum.
